“Lauren and I have been talking,” Steve says to Max as we sit on the sofa after dinner, a tray of liqueurs in front of us. “We think it’s best that we move out. Then you can tell your dad you are no longer romantically involved with us.”

We decided to only speak about this after we’d eaten, letting Max talk through his anger and disappointment with his parents first.

He grabs our hands. “Absolutely not. You. Are. Not. Moving. Out. Do you hear me? I won’t have you being hounded from my life.”

“We’re not talking about leaving you,” I say softly. “Just giving you some space.”

“No,” he growls. “We’ll ride this out together. It will pass. The press is making more of it than it warrants. I mean, who the hell cares about me and my private life?”

“The board of Conti Coffee,” Steve mutters. “We don’t want you to lose your position as CEO.”

And we don’t want to lose our jobs either. It’s ok for Steve as he’s British and can still work anywhere in the EU, but I’d need a new work permit. It took Max long enough to arrange the paperwork for me to join his company. If I’m fired, I’ll have to go back to Seattle with a bad record.

“It’s not going to happen. I won’t let it. My father thinks he has the board eating out of his hand, but he forgets I have my supporters. I’ve done a lot to modernize production in the year since his retirement. Profits are up and the smart coffeemaker will send our shares skyrocketing.”

My stomach churns. I don’t want to voice my worry that the machine will fail to live up to his expectations. Steve and I have done our best. But, what if our best just wasn’t good enough?

Max is looking at me like he wants to see inside my head. I can’t let him realize how scared I am.

“Yeah, you’re right, of course,” I say, trying to inject a note of optimism into my voice. “The smart machine will rock.”

“Come here,” Max says, holding out his arms. “I need you both so bad. It’s been such a crappy day, but the thought of the two of you has kept me going.”

We lean into him, our heads on his chest, our hands touching.

“Ah, that feels so good.” Max’s rich melodic voice rumbles against my ear. “Can you sense how much I love you, want you, need you both? It’s like a fire in my soul.”

“In mine too, Max,” I whisper, lifting my fingers to caress his beard.

Steve kisses him hard and then pulls away. “We’ll get through this, Max. Lauren and I are here for you every fucking second of every fucking minute of every fucking day. We. Are. Here. For. You.”

We sit up and his lips skim our foreheads before making their way down to our mouths. He kisses us, one after the other, again and again, and our tongues delve deep and hungry, twisting together in a spiral of desire.
